You have probably heard of the term “fanfiction” everywhere– especially in the social media space– and probably read one yourself. Fanfiction (fanfic) is a body of creative written work by fans of a particular source like movies, shows, or video games.

The evolution of the Internet allowed for fanfiction authors to publish their works on Wattpad or on Twitter– both of which where the love team fandoms can be found. It can be easily liked and shared as well as talked about in the fandom. The practice of writing fanfiction makes use of reflective writing about life and that is translated into a “universe” that is different from one author to another. Fanfiction or Alternative Universe? While typical fanfiction is set into the boundaries of the original source, alternative universes or “AUs” are more customized to fit into the writer’s prompt.

Whenever fanfiction is brought up, it may be perceived to be beneficial for the members of the fandom, but it is as much for authors. The fanfiction explores the ability of authors to create a “universe” of immersion that is adaptable for its readers.

As creative as it is, writing fanfiction is motivating for fandoms to anticipate what happens next with these existing love team pairings. The characters in fanfiction stories portrayed by love team pairings often complete the cliffhangers from their original sources. This makes the fandom be immersed with the story about an adventure or a romance plot, make discussions by relating it to their own experiences and identity, while others might even create artworks or any related visual content.

Fanfiction is an expression of love and admiration. Indeed its influence and contribution has shifted the way we take on storytelling– more representative than ever.
